Maternal Outcomes & Management of Epilepsy in Nepal Through Understanding and Metrics (MOMENTUM)

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions worldwide, affecting more than 50 million people, with the majority living in low- and middle-income countries. Despite its high burden, epilepsy remains underdiagnosed and undertreated in many countries, including Nepal. Limited diagnostic facilities, shortage of specialists, social stigma, and lack of awareness contribute to a large treatment gap.

In Nepal, available data on epilepsy are outdated, and there is very limited information about care pathways, treatment practices, and patient experiences. Women with epilepsy, especially during pregnancy, face additional risks including complications during pregnancy, medication-related risks for the fetus, and increased maternal health risks.

This study aims to address these knowledge gaps by collecting clinical, social, and maternal health data related to epilepsy in Nepal.
